Case Study: Sour Service Drill Collar in a Middle East Onshore Field

Machining & Threading Considerations for Drill String Components

General Machining Guidelines:

  • H1150 condition:Best machinability (similar to 304 stainless)

  • H900 condition:Requires carbide tooling and reduced speeds; expect shorter tool life

  • Threading:Roll threading is preferred for improved fatigue resistance and galling resistance

API Threading Considerations:

  • Threads should be cut or rolled per API 7-2 specifications.

Heat Treatment After Machining:
